Older couple jogging, holding water bottles, smiling - Feel Years Younger: Ways to Get Your Energy Back

A study conducted by the Journal of Applied Psychology found that individuals over the age of 70 who implemented regular exercise into their daily routine had lungs, muscles, and heart health comparable to adults in their 40s!

If you’ve noticed that you lack the same energy levels you had in your younger years, adding exercise to your routine could be a great way to boost your energy.

At Astral at Franklin, our mission to help residents live purposefully starts with wellness. Our active senior living community in Franklin, Indiana, is dedicated to providing helpful resources so that you can feel re-energized and start focusing on the activities that truly make life worth living. Below, we’re sharing how exercise can benefit energy levels and simple ways to naturally boost your energy.

How Does Exercise Increase Your Energy?

Everyone knows that the benefits of exercise are seemingly endless. Even a small amount of daily physical activity can help you sleep better at night, lower your chances of depression and help you feel in better control of your body.

When we think about exercise increasing energy levels, it might seem a bit backward – how does exerting energy add more energy to your body?

When we exercise, the effort it takes to participate in a workout promotes blood and oxygen flow throughout the body, which helps our cardiovascular system work efficiently. As a result, over time, our bodies can perform specific tasks more easily than before. For instance, if you feel winded after climbing a flight of stairs or carrying a load of heavy groceries, regular exercise is an excellent way to boost your energy, endurance and strength so that these tasks take less energy to complete.

In addition, regular exercise is also linked to improved sleep. When we have a good night’s sleep, we wake up feeling refreshed and invigorated, which leads to increased energy levels throughout the day!

How Often Should You Exercise?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), physical activity is one of the best preventative actions adults over the age of 65 can take regarding their health. Exercise can prevent various health issues like heart disease and obesity, and it helps your muscles stay strong to keep you moving.

The CDC recommends that adults over 65 participate in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week to stay fit, healthy and energized. That might seem like a lot at first, but when we break that number down into a weekly schedule, it adds up to about 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Moderate-intensity exercise can include a walk or a brisk jog.

This recommendation includes two days dedicated to strength training activities to promote muscle growth, with balancing activities added to ensure your mobility is improving. For strength training, try exercises that target the major muscle groups, which consist of:

  • Legs
  • Hips
  • Back
  • Abdomen
  • Chest
  • Shoulders
  • Arms

For balance, you can implement simple activities into your workout routine, such as:

  • Walking backward
  • Standing on one leg
  • Using a wobble board

If you want to get creative and try something new, here are some excellent workout ideas:

  • A structured exercise class, like Zumba, Pilates, Tai Chi, or yoga
  • Riding a bicycle
  • Water aerobics
  • Fun activities like gardening, woodworking, or even landscaping
